Marine Wildlife Photography Workshops
One-Day Alaska Marine Wildlife Photography Workshop
Join Closer to the Wild® for an immersive one-day marine wildlife photography workshop exploring the spectacular waters of Resurrection Bay and Kenai Fjords National Park.
Designed for photographers who want more than a standard sightseeing tour, this workshop brings together a small group of like-minded individuals passionate about wildlife, adventure, and creating powerful images in the wild landscapes of Alaska.
Throughout the day, we photograph the incredible marine wildlife that calls these fjords home, including humpback whales, orcas, puffins, sea lions, sea otters, harbor seals, seabirds, and more. During the peak season, we may also have the opportunity to witness and photograph the extraordinary behavior of humpback whales bubble-net feeding — one of Alaska’s most dramatic and sought-after wildlife photography moments.
Towering tidewater glaciers, rugged fjords, and ice-filled coves provide an unforgettable backdrop for the workshop, offering incredible opportunities to photograph massive walls of blue ice, floating icebergs, and the raw power of Alaska’s glacial wilderness.
Every trip is different, with wildlife encounters and changing conditions creating unique opportunities from start to finish.
Guiding the experience is a published Alaska wildlife photographer with years of experience photographing the animals and landscapes of this region. Throughout the day, participants can gain insight into wildlife behavior, camera settings, composition, and techniques used to capture compelling images in Alaska’s challenging and ever-changing conditions.
This is a hands-on, immersive experience focused on both photography and connection — sharing the day with fellow photographers while learning, shooting, and exploring together aboard our custom 2026 Hewescraft Alaskan vessel.
With small groups and no rushed itinerary, we can spend more time where the action is — whether that means positioning for bubble-net feeding whales, photographing puffins along cliff faces, exploring tidewater glaciers, or drifting quietly alongside curious sea otters.
Whether you're an experienced photographer or simply passionate about wildlife and photography, this workshop is designed to provide an authentic Alaska experience with incredible opportunities to learn, connect, and capture unforgettable moments.

About Our Vessel
Our season begins aboard our brand-new 2026 Hewescraft 250 Alaskan, featuring a fully enclosed heated cabin designed to keep you comfortable while enjoying unobstructed 360° views of Alaska’s incredible coastal wilderness. Built for true ocean performance, this 28-foot vessel delivers exceptional ride quality and safety while offering added comforts such as suspension seating and a full-size onboard restroom.
Explore the bays and fjords the way locals do aboard our custom aluminum vessel. Its low-profile design allows us to approach wildlife with a unique perspective, keeping your viewing angle close to the waterline—perfect for photography and unforgettable wildlife encounters.
When the weather turns, guests can stay warm and dry inside the heated cabin while still enjoying excellent visibility. The spacious rear deck provides plenty of room to step outside, and the forward windshield hatch allows easy access to the bow for capturing every angle. Large sliding windows on both the port and starboard sides bring the action right to your seat.
The boat comfortably accommodates up to six passengers plus the captain, with two suspension captain’s chairs and two large bench seats. There’s also ample storage space for photographers and their equipment, so you can bring everything you need to capture the images of a lifetime.
Our vessel is equipped with state-of-the-art marine electronics to ensure a safe, efficient, and highly capable experience on the water. Systems include marine radar for navigation and collision avoidance, chart plotter GPS for navigating Alaska’s countless coves and rugged outcroppings, sonar to monitor activity below the surface, AIS transponder technology for increased vessel awareness and safety, and marine VHF communications to stay connected with other vessels and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Powered by twin 200 HP outboard engines, the vessel provides the speed and maneuverability needed to quickly reach wildlife locations and position the boat perfectly for viewing and photography. To further enhance the photography experience, the boat is equipped with the Yamaha Helm Master EX full maneuverability system featuring integrated autopilot and joystick controls. This advanced technology allows us to precisely hold and maneuver the vessel’s position using GPS, helping create stable shooting opportunities and optimal positioning when photographing whales, wildlife, glaciers, and rapidly changing scenes in Alaska’s dynamic marine environment.
Meet the Captain
Captain Daniel Carline holds a United States Coast Guard issued Merchant Mariner Credential OUPV Operator License. Daniel is also certified in Adult and Pediatric First Aid, CPR and is fully insured.
In the summer of 2011, Daniel stepped aboard a whale watching boat in Seward with a camera around his neck and binoculars in hand. Surrounded by towering fjords, glaciers, and incredible marine wildlife, he was immediately captivated by the raw beauty of Alaska and the unforgettable experiences shared with friends who introduced him to the region.
After years of returning to Alaska for wildlife photography adventures, Daniel and his wife Tiffany made the move to Alaska in 2019 to pursue a life centered around adventure, the ocean, and the outdoors. His deep passion for marine wildlife and photography eventually led him to earn his Captain’s License, allowing him to share Alaska’s incredible coastal wilderness with guests through immersive wildlife viewing and photography experiences on the water.
